The Gerry Boyle Firecracker Kids Triathlon is a Cambridge tradition—and a favorite way to kick off the Fourth of July. Whether your child is brand new to triathlon or already loves to race, Firecracker is designed to be fun, encouraging, and memorable. For many kids, this is their very first triathlon. For others, it’s a race they come back to year after year.

What to Expect
Kids complete three activities in order:
Swim in the YMCA pool
Bike on a supervised, neighborhood course
Run to the finish with lots of cheering along the way
Our goal is simple: help every participant feel safe, supported, and proud.
New to Triathlon?
Firecracker is a wonderful first race. Many kids come in a little nervous and leave smiling, proud, and already talking about next year.
A few things parents love to know:
- The environment is upbeat and supportive
- Volunteers are everywhere to help guide kids
- There’s no pressure—just participation and fun
- You don’t have to be an “experienced triathlon family” to belong here
It Takes a Village (and we have a great one)!
The Firecracker Kids Triathlon is powered by an incredible group of volunteers—neighbors, parents, athletes, and community members who show up to make the day special for our kids. You don’t need any prior experience. We’ll guide you, and there are a variety of roles to fit different comfort levels. It’s a fun, high-energy morning—and one of the most rewarding ways to be part of the event.
